Railway Workers Receive Pay After Protest

Some workers of the Ghana Railways Company Limited (GRCL), who laid down their tools to demand their salaries that have been in arrears since October, last year, have called off the strike.

This follows payments into their account last week by the government.

The Ghanaian Times gathered that the workers resumed work last Friday.

The Chief Director at the Ministry of Transport, Twumasi-Ankra Selby confirmed this to The Ghanaian Times on phone, stating that their salary for the past three months had been paid to the workers.

When contacted on the issue, Mr. Samuel Kokvena, the Accra Area Manager of the company, told the paper that the trains were currently operating.

It is recalled that The Ghanaian Times on January 7, published that the Nsawam-Tema bound trains had been grounded for the past three weeks, following the withdrawal of services by the workers, who are demanding their tree month’s salary arrears, as well as the removal of the board members of the GRCL.

Hundreds of commuters, who travelled by the train, were stranded and the country was losing millions of cedis in revenue.

Investigations by The Ghanaian Times revealed that the trains were parked at their various stations with red bands displayed on them and at their offices.
