Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah- Arthur, has reiterated government’s commitment to continue to make the country an Icon of peace and preferred destinations for foreign direct investment.

He stressed that peace is necessary to facilitate development hence the determination of the government to take every measure to ensure sustainable tranquility.

Vice President Amissah- Arthur made this known at Chiana, near Paga in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, where he addressed the chiefs and people of the area during the celebration of their third annual Fao Festival.

It was on the theme: “Transforming lives through peace and unity.”

The occasion also marked the end of the farming season and people use the period to express their appreciation to God and their ancestors for good harvest.

Mr Amissah-Arthur said although 2015 global and economic situation was not helpful coupled with the challenges in the energy sector, government fulfilled its pledge to the people to contribute to changing lives and improvement in health, education and roads.

On the environment, the Vice President called on the people to stop activities that contribute to global warming and depletion of ozone layer.

“Fao festival should remind us of need to keep a healthy environment, with severe and prolonged harmattan, where indiscriminate bush burning is creating havoc to the land and agriculture,” he said.

Pe Detundini Adialli Ayagitam 111,Chiana Pio, reminded the Vice President of his call for the separation of Paga and Chiana District.

He said the creation of Paga and Chiana Local Council in the 1960s, has led to myriad of challenges including the difficulty of some communities in commuting to Paga, the district capital.

Pe Ayagitam also appealed to government for a poly clinic, explaining that the current health facility in the western corridor is not adequate to handle the medical needs of the vast area.

He also called for the improvement of the infrastructural needs of the locality, which has only one senior high school with single classroom block, which cannot accommodate the growing number of students .

“The state of the main road from Navrongo to Chiana, especially from Gwenia to Kalivio and some feeder roads linking the four paramountcies need attention.

“These roads gravelled would improve accessibility and economic and agricultural activities in the area,” Pe Ayagitam said.
