Pilot Quarry Defies Minerals Commission Order

Pilot Quarry Ltd, an illegal stone quarry company operating in the Gomoa Ojobi area in the Central region has flouted a directive by the Minerals Commission to stop blasting until they are able to produce the requisite documentation for operation.

Pilot Quarry was in the news last year when energy residents of Gomoa Ojobi, Akotsi, Buduatta, Akimanman and surrounding areas protested against operations of the quarry citing unannounced blasting, water and air pollution, cracks in their buildings among other issues and petitioned the Minerals Commission to act.

A visit to the affected communities by this reporter revealed that the company after the protest by residents and subsequent directive from the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency disregarded the directive and is still operating.

A source at the Ministry of Environment and Science and Technology disclosed that an order by the Ministry to management of Pilot Quarry has not been heeded to, prompting the affected communities to write again to the Ministry and Minerals Commission for intervention.

Opanyin Kweku Attah, an Elder in Gomoa Buduatta said they are planning a meeting with other affected communities to plan their next line of action, adding, “I have no idea what we will do next but I can tell for sure that anything could happen; demonstration or forceful closure of the quarry because it has become clear government won’t intervene”.
