NPP Prevails On Italian PM To Review ENI-Sankofa Deal

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling on the visiting Italian premiere, Matteo Renzi, to use his office to review the ENI-Sankofa deal.

According to the NPP, the deal disadvantages Ghana in that even the negotiated gas price of $9.8/MMBtu is higher than the price of gas sold to Ghana from Nigeria.

“It is even more expensive than our own Atuabo Gas price of $8.8/MMBtu delivered at Takoradi,” a statement issued by the party on Tuesday, February 2 said.

The statement was to welcome to Ghana the Italian Prime Minister, who is on a two-day working visit to the West African nation.

Signed by Nana Akomea, the Communications Director of NPP, the statement drew attention of Mr Renzi to the contractual relationship ENI, a state-owned Italian oil conglomerate, has with the Ghanaian government.

“At the negotiated gas price of $9.8/MMBtu, it puts to great risk Ghana’s potential of becoming the Petrochemical hub of the region to Nigeria, due to that country’s lower gas prices.”

The NPP explained that it is highlighting these issues “as this is potentially the largest single investment in Ghana, which will bind the Ghanaian people for the next 20 years.

“It is, therefore, important that the benefits of this project are not so one-sided as they seem today.”
