Will CPP Continue To Support FSC?

The exit of Samia Yaba Nkrumah form the leadership of the Conventions Peoples Party (CPP) may have some implications for the causes to which she anchored the fortunes of the once vibrant party. As chairman of the party, Samia became one of the leading advocates of Food Sovereignty Ghana (FSG) which vigorously campaigned against the introduction of Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs). Her identification with the struggle against GMOs was so strong that it became an issue in the Central Committee of the party with some leading members distancing themselves from the campaign. Indeed, the immediate Past Presidential Candidate of the party, Dr. Abu Sakara said firmly that the Central Committee had not endorsed the anti-GMO position of Samia Nkrumah. Samias position was very simple. She argued that the introduction of GMOs could have some unforeseen dangerous consequences for Ghana and all countries which embrace them. She was also vocal on the need for Ghana and all third countries to control their own agriculture by ending the importation of patented seeds from such multi-national corporations as MOSANTO. The question is will the CPP continue to offer support to Food Sovereignty Ghana and remain a passionate opponent of the introduction of genetically. The indications are not that negative as Ivor Greenstreet, the newly elected presidential candidate of the party has called for a full examination of the issues involved. At a pre-congress presidential debate, Comrade Greenstreet insisted that the Independence of Ghana cannot be compromised even in the field of agriculture. If Comrade Greenstreet becomes the new advocates of food sovereignty, he is likely to encounter some opposition in the ranks of the party.
