Government’s decision to spend GHc3.6 million of Ghana’s oil revenue on rebranding 116 Chinese Huanghai buses could not prevent one of the buses from losing its steam as it was spotted broken down in the middle of a busy road.
The bus needed manual help from several persons who had to strain all their sinews to push the vehicle to a safer lane.
The buses meant for the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) were only rebranded with portraits of John Mahama and past presidents and valued at GHc3.6 million.
The controversial deal led to the resignation of the Minister of Transport, Ms Dzifa Attivor, in December, 2015.
On December 22, 2015, the Attorney General presented a report to the Chief of Staff, Mr. Julius Debrah after it was directed to probe the contract awarded to Smartty’s. It later emerged that the company was overpaid to carry out the rebranding contract awarded.
Pressure group, Occupy Ghana, has filed a suit at the High Court demanding that government furnishes it will all documents covering the transaction with Smartty’s Management and Production Limited, over the re-branding of some 116 Metro Mass Buses.
According to the group, it intends to use the information to evaluate whether Ghanaians were shortchanged in the process.
The AG has ordered Smartty’s Management and Production Limited to refund some 1.7 million Ghana cedis after the company was overpaid for its services.
An earlier request from the group to the AG for information, was rejected on the bases that some aspects of the matter was is in court.
But Occupy Ghana says it is dissatisfied with the reason hence their decision to seek legal redress.
