AshGold 2-1 Medeama: Miners begin title defence on high

Nuhu brothers outclassed resilient Yellow and Mauves in an end-to-end Ghana Premier League action on Sunday.

Ashantigold began their defence of the Ghana Premier League title with a 2-1 win over Medeama SC at Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi on Sunday.

Bashir Hayford’s side took the lead when Nuhu Alhassan’s strike deflected off a Medeama defender, dropping inside the net.

The visitors levelled through Bernard Ofori from the spot after he was brought down in the penalty area by onrushing goalkeeper Robert Dabou but the Miners retook the lead early in the second half as Fuseinu Nuhu outmuscled two defenders before sweeping the ball past the goalkeeper.

The host took matters into their hands early in the clash, with Nuhu looking poised to open the scoring after 14 minutes when he cut inside Medeama box after linking up to Osei Baffour’s pass but Paul Aidoo thwarted the action with a last-ditch tackle.

The Miners maintained their ascendancy and almost had their efforts paid off by the 35th minute when Alhassan’s shot deflected off a defender, crashing against the side net.

The champions' domination slowed down following Ofori’s immediate impact in his debut league game for the Yellow and Mauves.

The former Edubiase United forward was heckled down by goalkeeper Dabou in the box, resulting in a penalty which Bernard Ofori stepped up to execute successfully to level for his side.

Ashantigold returned from the interval and continued from where they left it, with Medeama's Kwesi Donsu forcing a save from AshGold’s Dabou in a run that could have handed the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The Miners found back their rhythm, putting pieces together and finally found a breakthrough.Fusienu Nuhu, the youngest of the Nuhu brothers, latched onto a pass from Isaac Amoah, outrunning two defenders before curling a powerful volley past Tagoe after 57 minutes.

Ashantigold will travel to Algeria to lock horns with M.O Bejaia in the second leg of the Caf Champions League.

The Ghanaian representatives hold a 1-0 advantage and any defeat aside two-goal margin will see them into the second round of the competition.
