A man who swindled a student by offering her pieces of broken glass as diamond is before an Accra Court charged with conspiracy to commit crime and stealing.
Ebenezer Nyarko, pleaded not guilty on both counts and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢ 4,000 with two sureties. His accomplice, one Boateng, is on the run.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Lois Konadu, told the court, presided over by Mr James Kojo Bota, that the complainant, Ms Deborah Addison, is a student of IPMC at Adabraka in Accra.
She said on February 3, 2016, Deborah was on her way to school when she met Boateng around the Tudu traffic light.
She said Boateng asked Deborah for direction and in the course of the conversation, Nyarko who was passing by joined in.
Sergeant Konadu said the two with the intent to commit crime tricked the accused, offering her pieces of broken glass as diamond as a reward for assisting them.
Before giving her the alleged diamond, they asked her to leave her bag, containing her laptop, mobile phone, school text books and a calculator, to go and buy camphor to be added to the alleged diamonds.
She said Deborah obliged but on her return, Boateng and Nyarko had vanished with her bag. A complaint was made to the Accra Central Police.
According to the prosecutor on February 11, 2016, Deborah spotted Nyarko using the same trick on another person at the same place and she raised an alarm.
Nyarko admitted to the offence in his caution statement and mentioned Boateng as an accomplice but could not lead the police to arrest him.
