2 Ferries Handed Over To Transport Ministry

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has handed over the two ferries used on the Volta Lake during the closure of the Adomi Bridge to the Ministry of Transport.

The ferries, the MV Senchi and the MV Akrade, were acquired after the Adomi Bridge was closed for two years for rehabilitation works.

Speaking at a handover ceremony at Senchi in the Eastern Region Wednesday, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, said the ferries would be relocated to yet-to-be-announced locations.

He said the ministry would continue to pay attention to improvement in road safety measures to reduce accidents in the country.

"We will aggressively continue with our monitoring and inspection activities to address any structural or engineering defects that will be identified," he said.

Transport Minister

The Minister of Transport, Mr Fifi Kwetey, who took delivery of the two ferries, said the ministry had already approached the firm which supplied the ferries.

"We have asked it to submit proposals for the dismantling of the ferries at Senchi and their reassembling at Akosombo before their deployment to other crossing points," he said.

Mr Kwetey said the two ferries would be used to enhance the capacity of the Volta Lake Transport Company in providing safe and secure ferry services to communities along the catchment areas of the lake.

"It will also support agricultural activities within the farming communities and marketing centres," he added.
