Louis van Gaal sings Fosu-Mensahs praises

The Red Devils coach is happy with the performance of the Dutch-born in their Wednesday’s triumph over Watford.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has praised youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensahfollowing the 18-year-old’s first full appearance for the Red Devils on Wednesday.

Born to Ghanaian parents in the Netherlands, the defender lasted the entire duration of United’s 1-0 win over Watford at Old Trafford, three days after making his English Premier League debut – a substitute appearance - in a 3-2 defeat of Arsenal on Sunday.

The versatile Dutch youth star played in central defence against the Hornets as against the Gunners when he filled in at left-back.

“Timothy has saved us three times, I think because of his speed,” van Gaal told his club’s official website.

“So I was very pleased that he was on the pitch. He wanted to be changed early in the second-half [because he picked up a knock] but I let him stay on because he always closed the door for us.

“I think the youngsters have given us a lot of spirit and now, when you see the dressing room full of joy with all the players laughing, it’s beautiful to see.”

Fosu-Mensah joined United in 2014 after impressing for Dutch side Ajax at the AEGON Future Cup.

He has represented the Netherlands at under-15, 16, 17 and 19 levels.
