Police Cited For Shoddy Investigation

The La District Police Command has been accused of failing to properly investigate a murder case reported to it on August 26, 2015 by family members of one Alice Korang who died as a result of an alleged assault on her by the landlord.

Some aggrieved family members told DAILY GUIDE that when the matter was reported, police failed to request for an autopsy report to aid in their investigation but instead gave the family the permission to bury the body.

The suspect Emmanuel Odamtten, 40, was arrested and detained, but the fear that he would be freed is eminent.

She died at the police hospital as a result of the beatings she received from the landlord.

An aggrieved family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deceased, Alice Korang, 47, lodged a formal complaint to the police about the assault before she died.

In 2014, the suspect in the case, Emmanuel Odamtten rented a parcel of land to the deceased to live on.

On August 10, 2015, the deceased had some misunderstanding with the landlord leading to a fight.

Alice Korang was brutally assaulted and she vacated the area after being transported to a nearby clinic for medical care by her son.

The following morning around 9pm, Madam Alice was on her way to visit her children when Emmanuel again attacked her for insulting him the previous day.

The suspect allegedly whipped Alice like a baby after which he used a metallic substance to hit the head causing injury to the head.

The victim immediately proceeded to Tse Addo Police Station to report the matter after which a medical form was issued to her to go to hospital for medical attention.

The victim went to the police hospital for medical attention and was given drugs but immediately she returned from the hospital, she fell unconscious and was rushed back to the hospital.

The victim died while receiving treatment at the hospital and so the family followed up to the police station to report Mr. Emmanuel.

Suspect Odamtten was arrested and detained but the police failed to request for an autopsy to establish the cause of death before releasing the body to the family for burial.

The family member said since the body had already been buried, they were afraid justice will not be served since nothing in the police investigations could be used to either free the suspect or implicate him.
