Avoiding June 3 Disaster: Residents Contribute GH 50 Each To Construct Roads And Gutters

Residents of Awoshie Alang, a suburb in the Greater Accra Region have reached a consensus to contribute GH¢ 50.00 per household to safeguard their community ahead of the June/July rains following the mayhem caused the community last year when the June 3, 2015 flood disaster struck.

According to the residents, the disaster left most of them homeless for days as the floods took over their homes and drove them to seek shelter with friends in different communities.

The residents disclosed that they decided to do it on their own after several pleas to the Member of Parliament for the Area, Shirley Ayorkor Botwe to come to the aid of the community yielded no results.

They added that their plea to government is to repair the roads in the community and construct gutters for free flow of water during the raining season.

After the benevolence of a resident, Mohamed Abdulai, who got about 25 trips of gravels to fill the streets to increase the density of the streets to descend rain water into the main gutters; it encouraged some members of Alang to follow his good example.

Their GH¢ 50.00 contribution, which some residents have already started paying, is to be used to pay for the services of a contractor.

This decision was arrived at after the formation of an association by residents called ‘Awoshie Alang Abrantea Residents Community Development Association.’

According to Kofi Arhin Ghansah, chairman of the Association, the group is to offer residents of the community one platform to address their concerns and arrive at decisions for the good of the people.

Meanwhile, the Zongo chief of the community, Sutang Mohammed Mazili was of the view that the Association will bring about inter-religious unity as the community has about 50% Muslims and 50% Christians.

According to him, the association will structure the community in a more modern manner where misunderstanding between tenants and landlords would be addressed in a democratic manner.
