GPL: Inter Allies 2-3 Hearts: Phobians Maintain Top Spot

Three second-half goals over Inter Allies gave the Phobians their fourth win of the season as they keep firm hold on the top spot.

Inter Allies failed to beat Hearts of Oak after going down 2-3 in matchday five of the Ghana Premier League at the Tema Sports Stadium on Sunday despite claiming a two-goal lead earlier on.

Goals from Frederick Boateng and Gockel Ahortor gave Allies a 2-0 cushion by the hour mark but a brace from substitute Ibrahim Musah and a strike from Isaac Mensah eventually handed the Phobians the maximum points to maintain their unbeaten run.

Hearts came into the meeting on the background of three wins and one draw while their hosts were 10th on the log.

With Allies controlling the opening exchanges, the Phobians were reluctant to move forward, as Evans Mensah and Ropapa Mensah posed some early threats in front of Hearts goal.

Goalkeeper Abdoulaye made a second fingertip save from Allies’ striker Ropapa Mensah by the 30th minute to keep his side safe from havoc.

Mustapha Essuman went on a quick, solo run and tested Allies goalkeeper Kwame Baah, who managed to gather the midfielder’s effort in a second attempt.

After the break, Allies continued on the ascendancy, with Boateng spearheading a move that led to the opener by the 49th minute.

Hearts continued to struggle defensively and a good save from Abdoulaye in the 56th minute prevented Ropapa from powering Allies' lead to 2-0.

However, by the 63rd minute, the hosts claimed the second through Gockel Ahortor, frustrating the efforts of Kenichi Yastuhashi and his charges to pull level.

Hearts began to initiate attacks, opting for long range strikes. Isaac Mensah later combined with experienced Mustapha Essuman, with the former pulling one back after 68th minute.

Togolese international Foovi Aguidi and Ibrahim Musa came in for Eric Kumi and Cosmos Dauda respectively as Hearts poured forth in search of the equaliser.

Ibrahim Musa latched on to a loose ball and slotted home the equaliser on 80th minute.

While the hosts thought they had at least grabbed a point after holding the visitors until 90 minutes, Musa struck his second to snatch a late winner to the dismal of local fans.

Hearts are still first on the log with 13 points after five games, two points above second-placed Wa All Stars.
