Lets Give New BoG Governor 100 Days To Test His Competence - Dr Assibey-Yeboah

Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah has given 100 days to test the competence of the new Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr. Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku as the current state of 18 percent inflation needs good measures to bring it to a single digit.

According to him, it is too early to determine his ability to rise to the occasion to save the sinking currency and bring hope to the economy in terms of monetary policies that will take care of the interest rate and the exchange rate.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah said it will be wrong to assess his performance based on the fact that he served as a deputy Governor under Dr. Wampah who performed abysmally in his capacity as the Governor.

He stressed that the deputies are sometimes relegated to the background in terms of decision making, making it difficult to determine the competence of Dr. Issahaku as the substantive Governor at the early stage of his appointment.

He however indicated that as the Central Bank has suffered from lack of proper direction and inactive research department, Dr. Issahaku should focus his attention on these areas as they shake policies.

“I am not preview to his work at the Bank of Ghana because I left the place before he was appointed by the President. Deputies are sometimes relegated to the background but there can be a difference in his ability because he operates as a deputy who didn’t have full control of the Central Bank,” he stated.

“The President has made his appointment and we should give him more time; after 100 days, we will scrutinize what he has done . . . if he doesn’t perform to our satisfaction, I will complain but since it is too early, let’s see how he performs. Inflation is 18 percent and we need a Governor who has a credibility to bring it to a single digit,” he indicated.
