MP Aspirant Wages War On Filth

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Trobu Constituency in the Greater Accra region, Maame Afua Sekyi Aidoo, has stated categorically that the time has come for Ghanaians to rekindle communal spirit to wage war on filth.

Speaking on Light Television in Accra, Madam Aidoo expressed worry over the indiscriminate dumping of solid waste in drains and open gutters by unscrupulous Ghanaians, and stressed the need for sanitation offenders to be severely punished to serve as deterrent to others.

“I am actually worried to see our various communities engulfed with filth but nobody cares whatsoever about the consequences of their actions. Everywhere you turn to the city of Accra, there are rubbish here and there and people continued to sell in such unhealthy environment.

“…places like Kaneshie Central Market, Agbogbloshie to mention but a few are interesting to watch in terms of filth to the extent that whenever there is a heavy rainfall, these places become unbearable, undesirable as well as unattractive to buy foodstuff from,” she observed.

She gave assurance to jealously restore the pride of the Greater Accra region’s enviable pride of being the cleanest nationwide by leading the crusade against filth.

She called for the need for representatives from the sanitation department to go into various homes to see to it that people observe good hygiene.

Madam Aidoo said the time has come for traditional authorities within the region to insist on their authority to rekindle the spirit of communalism to ensure clean environment that will prevent cholera and other unhygienic related disease for a healthy nation.

She pleaded with traditional authorities to collaborate with their respective District/Municipal Assemblies to refurbish some of the traditional laws that forbid indiscriminate littering as Assemblies by-laws with punitive punishment that would deter offenders.

She said there was no need for political colourisation of the National Sanitation Day because disease related to insanitary environment has no consideration of one’s political affiliation, hence the need for a total support to sustain it.
