MUSIGA Calls For Peace Songs

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has sent out notice to its members to submit songs for consideration and inclusion in an album of songs to stress the need for peaceful and credible elections in November this year. Deadline for submission is April 29.

The call for entries follows the MUSIGA’s selection by STAR- Ghana as one of its partner organisations for a violence-free and trustworthy election campaign.
MUSIGA is among 35 other civil society organizations selected by STAR- Ghana as implementing-partners on the project.

According to the union’s president,  Bice Osei Kuffour aka Obour,  the best three songs selected by a committee of competent personalities, will win cash prizes and be up for the VGMA Development Song of the Year.

In all, 15 songs will appear on the compilation album which will include an all-star piece slated to feature some of the leading musicians of our time. The chairman of the song selection committee, Bessa Simons says the songs to be submitted should clearly have messages on the need for peaceful and credible elections and should be well- recorded.

Activities lined up by MUSIGA to raise public awareness about the need for peace in the run-up to the general elections include peace walks, fora and concerts from May to December.

The activities will be supported by social media activations led by well-known musicians in this country. The MUSIGA project is dubbed “Using Musical as A Tool for National Cohesion in Election 2016”.

Meanwhile, MUSIGA in collaboration with Midland Savings and Loans, is offering a prize of GHC 10,000.00 to the winner of the VGMA Development Song Contest to be presented on the VGMA night on May 7. The amount is to enable the winner promote the song.

Midland Savings and Loans has consistently sponsored the car prize for VGMA winners over the past three years, but decided to encourage musicians to offer songs with useful messages this year.
