U/E House Of Chiefs Urges Calm Over Chieftaincy Disputes

Following recent chieftaincy clashes in Bolgatanga and Buru-Navio traditional areas in the Upper East Region, the President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Naba Sigiri Bewong, has called on all paramount chiefs, divisional chiefs and sub-chiefs in the region, to work in synergy for peace in their areas and eschew violence.

Naba Bewong disclosed this during a swearing in ceremony of the paramount chief of Talensi, Tongo-Raana Kolbisong Nalebgtang and other sub-chiefs into the house as members.

Naba Bewong, who also doubles as the Paramount Chief of the Sakoti Traditional Area, noted that there can never be development in any community without peace, and called on members of the house to work for peace to attract investors into the region to foster development.

“I have worked with you as president of the house for the past three years with the duty to ensure that peace in this region is sustained, which will then translate into development in our communities and for that matter the region.

This is because, there can never be development in any given community without peace, but unfortunately, that has not be totally successful because of the Bolgatanga chieftaincy matter and last week’s unfortunate incident in Buru-Navio in the Paga paramouncy.”

“I therefore wish to call on all members of this house to work for peace in their various traditional areas so that we can have a peaceful region for investors who want to come and invest their monies in businesses which will lead to creation of jobs for the teeming unemployed youth in the region,” Naba Bewong stated.

Naba Bewong appealed to all chiefs within the region to encourage the youth in their communities during this electioneering year, to embark on peaceful political campaigns devoid of insults and violence.

He also admonished chiefs to be neutral to all political parties by operating an open door policy to all political parties. Upper East Regional Minister, Albert Abongo, entreated the house of chiefs to come out with documentations on ascension to the various skins in the region, to curtail the unwanted chieftaincy disputes.

He said government will work to ensure the safety of lives and property in areas experiencing chieftaincy conflicts and impressed upon the chiefs to work for peace and harmony in the region to attract investments.
