Group Angry With Chief

Movement for Kingdom (MFK), a Christian group, has demanded the removal of a ban imposed on pupils of Assin Akropong Odumase D/A Basic School by the Chief of the area, Nana Ntow Assinor II, from attending watch-night service.

The group expressed worry over they described as the “uncommon behaviour” of the chief with regard to the ban, denying pupils of their right of freedom of worship as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

In a press statement issued to the media by the group over the weekend, it lamented the decision of the chief, describing it as an “ultra vires.”

The group noted that inasmuch as it supported the supremacy of traditional leaders, it was also its duty as a Christian group to assiduously make sure they respect the rights of the people and not abuse it.

“We do not see anything wrong with a student attending watch-night service to seek favour, help or guidance from God,” the group in the statement noted.

It, however, dismissed claims by the chief that watch-night service contributes to poor performance of pupils in examinations.

Meanwhile the group has urged the chief to concentrate on how to improve the educational infrastructure facilities in the various communities in the area.

To this end, they called for the immediate withdrawal of the ban so as to pave way for the pupils to worship God.
