BNI Should Stick To Their Core Mandate Mustapha Hamid

Spokesperson for the flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Mustapha Hamid has accused the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) of losing their core mandate due their recent unnecessary attacks on citizens, especially members of the NPP with no charges leveled against them.

According to him it would serve the BNI much good if it stick to their core mandate of doing the kind of investigations that would protect the collective security and integrity of each and every citizen of the country.

The personal photographer and bodyguard of the 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party were on Tuesday detained by the BNI for complying with the orders of their lawyers not to sign “Personality Profile” forms presented to them by officers of the BNI, as witnesses.

Mustapha Hamid said people have gone through several struggles and torture whiles others died in order to establish the democracy culture we are enjoying today since 1992, and we have sworn per our constitution never to allow our country to slide into autocratic governance anymore.

“. . therefore this ought not to be my concern or the office of our flag bearer, but the matter on board ought to be the worry of every single Ghanaian who is indeed concerned about protecting the democracy of this country.”

He further explained that it is about arrogance, impunity and lawlessness, and not for nothing that democratic governance is as well called the ‘rule of law’.

He added that “If acts by the BNI in recent times are not well handled, it would lead this country to the days of the 1979 practices which led to the misplacement of some Ghanaians, who have till date not been found."

“To be frank, the BNI has been given an autocratic power in our current regime to arrest and detain nationals at anytime of their choice without charging the victim of any crime caused. Therefore Ghanaians ought to arise and shut down the practices of the BNI with a discourse debate as it could prevent this country from peacefully practicing it democratic governance,” he angrily lamented in an interview on CITI FM
