Professor Fred Binka, the Vice Chancellor of University of Health and Allied Sciences, has said that it is important for students to be taught entrepreneurial skills to enhance their chances of getting into the job market after completing school.

“We all  should have entrepreneurial skills because there are no more ready jobs for people completing school”, Prof Binka stated when he interacted with journalists during a media familiarization tour of the University in Ho in the Volta Region.

He said the health needs of people with non-communicable diseases kept increasing and that the University was committed to training more professionals to fill the gap.

“If you have diabetes or hypertension, you may need about four visits to the hospital in a year, and with a higher level of awareness of our health needs, more health professionals are needed,” he said.

He said the facilities being constructed by the Yanjian Group Ghana Limited would facilitate the training a variety of health professionals such as doctors, midwives, speech and language therapists.

Prof Binka said the initial phase in the construction of the University’s facilities which started on August 7, 2013, ended on April 6th, 2015.

He said the first batch of 155 students was admitted on 29th September 2012, adding that the student population now stood at 2,000.

Prof Binka said the key aim of the University was to improve upon the health needs of the country, which kept growing by the day.

He said there were parts of the country where the doctor-patient ratio was one doctor to 100,000 patients, adding that currently, in the Volta Region, it was about one doctor to 25,000 people.

“We currently have about 200 faculty members with supporting staff; there is a total number of about 400 workers here,” said Prof Binka.

He congratulated the Yanjian Group Ghana Limited for the work done saying, “It was excellent and it was on time.”

Prof Binka continued, “This is a solid building. I saw it right from the beginning.”

The University consists of a faculty area with 11 buildings including the administration block, students’ hostel, and senior staff residence among others.

It also has other facilities such as the car parking lot, basket ball courts and some external roads.

Mr Zhao Wenbin, the Managing Director of Yanjian Group Ghana Limited, congratulated the Government of Ghana for its contributions towards the success of the project.

He said the management of the university had also been very co-operative and contributed greatly toward the success of the university.

Yanjian Group Ghana Limited is a Chinese owned large scale diversified construction enterprise.

He said the company was looking forward to more fruitful business collaborations with Ghana.

The Act establishing the University was passed in the Parliament of Ghana in December 2011 and operations started in September, 2012. It is dedicated wholly tohealth issues .
The main campus of the University, including the central administration is in Ho, while a second campus is located at Hohoe, all in the Volta Region.
