The Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has revealed that his otherwise thriving business was rundown upon the assumption of power by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2009.
According to him, his then successful transport business which ran courier services to some western African countries with over 80 haulage trucks (trailers) deliberately begun to be crippled.
Speaking to Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Starr FM Wednesday, the outspoken legislator and lawyer stated that it took the intervention of the then Vice President John Mahama to give him some relieve.
“When the NDC came to power in 2009 and the axle load thing was introduced…my trucks which had elephant embossment will load, other trucks will pass but my trucks will be made to park because they claim it was overloaded. For the tankers, we had a contract with GOIL, they could not abrogate the contract but the trucks will never be loaded.
“I remember in 2010 my partner who is an NDC member walked with me to then Vice President Mahama and complained bitterly to him about the treatment meted to us. We were worried because we had obligations with the banks and I think he called those responsible to order. I remember he gave a note for us to send somewhere and instructions were given that… stop frustrating the Youngman, so we started operating again. But around 2011 when I became the parliamentary candidate things started going bad again, politics is dirty.”
The young politician’s Excel Currier company which was very big at the time ran services to including taking red oil from Ivory Coast to Jos in Nigeria. He also hauled bauxite, manganese and later hauled diamonds from Takoradi to Buipe and Aflao to Buipe among several other routes.
