Wontumi's Detention An Arbitrary Use Of Police Discretionary Powers! - Jinapor

Former aide to Nana Akufo-Addo, Abu Jinapor says the detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Bosiako by the Regional Police Command was unreasonable.

According to him, Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly called 'Chairman Wontumi', may have been detained for other considerations other than the purpose for which he was caged by the Police.

Chairman Wontumi was held in police custody overnight before granted bail.

He was detained for allegedly assaulting the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North Collins Amankwah and the Constituency Secretary.

Following a complaint at the Police, the NPP Regional Chairman was declared wanted by the security service and had to report himself for investigations to commence into the assault case.

Members of the opposition NPP have raised eyebrows over the detention of the Regional Chairman, claiming it was an order from above to show him (Chairman Wontumi) where power lies.

Speaking on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, Abu Jinapor explained that though the Police have discretionary powers to detain any person who can potentially harm or interfere with investigations; 'Chairman Wontumi' did not have "capacity to interfere with the investigations of assault."

Except proven otherwise, he strongly believes that "the exercise or the discretion to detain Chairman Wontumi was not warranted and unreasonable. I don’t believe. That’s my opinion. It may have been for other considerations…Chairman Wontumi’s detention; it leaves much more to be desired.
