Bank Robber Arrested

The police have arrested one out of two suspected armed robbers who allegedly snatched an amount of GH¢139,000 from a customer at Ridge in Accra as he attempted to escape.

The victim (name withheld), according to information, had gone to withdraw the money from the Ridge branch of First Atlantic Bank when he was attacked in front of the bank.

The arrested suspect, identified as Ibrahim Shaibu, 21, in the company of   another person, armed with a pistol and using an unregistered motorbike, allegedly shot the victim before snatching the bag containing the money from him.

Luck eluded them when a police officer close by engaged them in a shootout.

The two suspects sustained various degrees of injury but the rider managed to escape with the motorbike, leaving his accomplice, who was nabbed.

Shaibu is currently at the Police Hospital receiving treatment.

Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, ASP Effia Tenge, Accra regional police spokesperson, said the incident occurred around 5:30 pm last Tuesday.

The victim,who was in the company of another, went to the headquarters of First Atlantic bank to withdraw some money.

Just in front of the bank, ASP Tenge posited, two armed men on an unregistered motorbike, who the police suspected were trailing the two customers, attacked and shot one of them and then snatched the bag containing the money.

In the process, she said a police officer who was on a special duty around the place of the incident, overheard two gunshots and swiftly moved to the scene to see what was amiss.

According to ASP Effia Tenge, other police personnel who were performing motor traffic duties also moved in to give a backup.

As soon as the suspects saw the police approaching, they engaged them in a gun battle, she said.

She said the money was retrieved from the arrested suspect.

Again a foreign pistol belonging to Shaibu, loaded with two live ammunition, was also found on him.

She called on medical practitioners and traditional healers to report anyone who reports with gunshot wounds at their outfits to the police.
