Sege Chiefs Unhappy

SOME AGGRIEVED Chiefs and people at Sege in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region are on a collision course with the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over the poor state of the Sege township roads.

The angry chiefs, assembly members and elders of the town had stopped an ongoing rehabilitation of a 9.50 kilometer road in the area with an explanation that until government is ready to properly re-construct the deplorable roads, they will not allow any grader to work.

According to them, they are fed up with President Mahama’s failed and empty promises.

Describing the 9.50 km road as election bait, they noted that government and its functionaries only visit the area during elections and forget about them afterwards.

Nene Agbewornu Dameh II, Chief of Sege, addressing a news conference at Agbedrafor, a suburb of Sege, accused the government of taking them for granted each election year.

Consequently, the chiefs and people of Sege have announced their intention to stage protests against the government to compel it to refurbish the deteriorating roads in the area.

He indicated that since 1977 that the road has been constructed, there has not been any major rehabilitation of the roads but numerous re-shapings have occurred which have wiped off all the gravels on the entire road.

The chief indicated that further re-shaping of the road will worsen the situation in this rainy season hence their action to stop the ongoing re-shaping.

“We the Chiefs, Assembly Members and the Opinion Leaders in the Sege area are opposed to the situation where the road is graded when high profile office holders are visiting the area only to be abandoned to become muddy and unmotorable when it rains. It seems that road is always being used as bait by government to garner votes from us,” the chief categorically stated.

According to him, sick persons are carried on motorbikes and bicycles to health centres due to the deplorable state of the Nakomkope, Bornikope, Agbedrafor, Toflokpo and Koluedor roads.

The chief observed that the roads in the district have become death traps for motorists and passengers, appealing to the government as a matter of urgency to tar the township roads for them.
