Police Sergeant Sent Out to Look for Jail Breakers

The Police Administration has given a Police Sergeant 10 days to produce 14 suspects who escaped from the Ashaiman Police Station cells. Sergeant Rockson Baffour was said to have on September 21, negligently opened the cells without the presence of armed guards to give food to one of the inmates leading to the escape of 16 suspects who were found a day after the incident, were sentenced to five years imprisonment each for escaping from lawful police custody by the Ashaiman Circuit Court. The two, Nicholas Amankwah, 32 and Dubartey Agbey, 25, were remanded in the Tema Community 22 police cells for suspected robbery and narcotic related offences respectively. Briefing the Times here, Superintendent Peter Kobina, the Ashaiman District Police Commander, said the offences for which the two were remanded would be dealt with later by the court. Mr Kobina said Sergeant Rockson Baffour�s negligence led to the escape of the suspects, saying, he had been given a 10 day ultimatum to look for the escapees. He appealed to the public who might have any information about the escapees to inform the police. It is recalled that the 16 suspects broke cell at the dawn of September 21, when Sgt. Baffour opened the cells without the presence of armed guards to give food to one of the inmates. Sgt. Baffour was allegedly pushed down and trampled on by the inmates who escaped in difference direction. The police have since intensified their search for the 14 who are still on the run.
