Information Communications Technology (ICT) has been described as a great tool for development and enhancing education for disadvantaged communities.

However, access and the use of computers and internet is still considerably low in most rural communities in the country.

In a bid to provide learning opportunities for students in rural communities using ICT as a tool, the 2015 co-winner of Tigo Ghana’s Digital Change-makers competition, Josephine Marie Godwyll has trained over 150 pupils of Asiafo Amanfro Community School in the Eastern region with digital literacy skills.

Through a week-long ICT Summer camp dubbed: “Digital Innovators Project”, Marie Godwyll was joined by volunteers from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Ghana, University of Cape-Coast, All Nations University, Koforidua Polytechnic, Technology University College (GTUC) and Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) who helped with the introductory training.

They taught the pupils basic computer skills and how to use ICT as a learning tool to study Mathematics, Science and English. At the end of the camp, the pupils recorded a 30.9 percent increase in test scores which was derived from baseline and after impact tests conducted.

Teachers from the school were also trained on how to utilize Ananse, a teacher e-learning software developed by Marie Godwyll, who is also the Founder of Young At Heart Ghana.

The ICT Summer Camp is aimed at exposing children and teachers in selected rural communities to practical digital literacy skills.
