Teshie-Nungua, La Residents Demonstrate Over Electricity Tariffs (PHOTOS)

Residents of Teshie-Nungua and La, suburbs in Accra hit some principal streets over the escalating price of electricity bills in the town.

The angry youth mostly self employed wielding placards and clad in red, demanded an immediate reduction in the electricity tariffs. According to them, the level of tariff increase far exceeds the announced 59.2 percent by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) more than a month ago.

They petitioned President John Mahama through the Municipal Chief Executive Seth Badu Tawiah to order an immediate reduction especially for prepaid customers. Some of the demonstrators most of whom are prepaid users in an interview on Adom News said, they can hardly make ends meet.

They complained that, the units bought for the meters are hardly sustainable, making the use of the meters very expensive.“We prefer to use the post paid meters to the new prepaid meters, it is very expensive to use the new prepaid meters” a resident bemoaned.

They have therefore threatened to destroy the prepaid meters that are been fixed for them in their various abodes if something is not done by the authorities.
