Civilian-Police collaboration has cut the crime rate in Nkwanta and its environs by 80 per cent, Joseph N.K. Ackah, the Superintendent of Police in charge of Nkwanta District, told the Ghana News Agency, (GNA), Monday.

He said Police outreaches had given a strong grounding to Watch Committees, whose members under the guidance of representatives of the people at the area’s Assembly, kept surveillance of the towns and suburbs.

Mr Ackah said stealing, burglary, break-ins, especially at the Quarters of formal sector workers and motorbike thefts were some of the crimes that had reduced.

He recalled a recent case where, a mechanic at Nkwanta, engaged to work on a motorbike stolen at Bontibor, gave the culprit out.

Mr Ackah said pep-talks and phone credits dashes kept the Watch Committee Members alive to their responsibilities.

He said the Police would ensure that members had no criminal records.

He said the Police in their mapping for patrols, placed a lot importance on the telecommunication network gaps along the highways.

Robert Avedzidah, an Assembly Member of West-Nkwanta, corroborated the Police Commander’s account, commending the Police for maintaining very fluid communication between the Watch Committee members.

He said Mr Ackah had made himself and other officers available to the Watch Committee members on phone anytime.
