Ghana Rugby Kicks Off Keep Fit Tour

The Ghana Rugby Players Association (GRUPA) kicked off its “Rugby Sevens Keep Fit Tour” in Cape Coast on the 25th of July, 2016 at the Wesley Girls SHS Park.

Three teams  from GARA (Greater Accra Rugby Association) namely Cosmos RFC, Conquerors SC and Dansoman Hurricanes RFC took part in the event that also included a ladies match between Cosmos Ladies and Dennis Foundation Ladies.

Griffons RFC, Dennis Foundation SC and Westside RC from CentWest (Central and Western Rugby Association), also took part in the event.

Dennis Foundation ladies paired up with Cosmos Ladies in a curtain raiser match which saw Cosmos Ladies taking the day.

The Cosmos Buffaloes Men’s sevens team lost two of their games against Griffons and Conquerors. Conquerors won all their games and were crowned first with Griffons taking second place and Dansoman Hurricanes emerging third.

According to Ako Wilson, President of GRUPA, the event was to  showcase Rugby as an alternative sport to the youth and the general public. It was also to help players keep fit while waiting to kick start the 15s league in November.

The venue chosen by the organizers was ideal due to the fact that it was visiting day at Wesley Girls and therefore the purpose of the event was achieved by showcasing Rugby to the sizable crowd that included visiting parents and students.

The President of CentWest, James Nunoo, was delighted about the turn of events and promised that the next event, to be held in Takoradi at the  Bompeh field in July, would be even more exciting.

He also commended the Referees for demonstrating command over the game and ensuring discipline.

The event was attended by Bismark Amponsah (GRFU Secretary General), James Nunoo (CentWest President), Minta Nyarko (GRFU Board Member), Ako Wilson (GRUPA President), Clement Dennis(CentWest Technical Director) and Sani Alhassan (Captain of the National 7s Team).
