Six people have been arrested for allegedly selling tiles as phones to their victims, at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and its environs.
The suspects, who allegedly concealed tiles in mobile phone boxes, and sold them to the unsuspecting victims, are Yaw Seth, 22, and Moses Bentum, 20.
The rest are Abiri Nubilla, 20, Gilbert Asamoah, 22, Danso George, 21 and Akwasi Osei, 23.
The Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Timothy Y. Bonga, confirmed the story to The Ghanaian Times yesterday.
He said the suspects often displayed genuine mobile phones to their victims, but secretly exchange them with tiles when victims show interest to purchase them.
ACP Bonga indicated that the suspects were arrested on July 8 and 9, this year, with 156 assorted mobile phones retrieved from them, adding that, they sold the communication equipment to their victims at cost between GH¢200 and GH¢1,500.
ACP Bonga said the suspects had carved soaps, floor tiles and wood into the shape of phones and sold them to their unsuspecting victims.
According to him the suspects could not provide receipts covering the phones when they were arrested, adding that they were identified by a victim they had defrauded.
The Regional Police Commander said that the other suspects were identified by their victims.
He said Osei was identified by his victim, who disclosed that, the suspect sold a Samsung S5 phone to him at a cost of GH 1,050, and escaped after collecting the money.
ACP Bonga advised the public to desist from patronising phones from the roadside dealers, instead they should purchase phones at accredited shops and outlets and collect receipts covering them.
