Missing Fisherman Body Found

The lifeless body of the fisherman, who was reported missing at Dixcove in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region, has been washed ashore barely 48 hours after the incident.

The fisherman reported¬ly got drowned in the sea at Dixcove – a fishing town in the region, on Sun¬day when the canoe carrying about five persons capsized.

The five fishermen were returning from a fishing expe¬dition and were approaching the shore when the incident occurred.

The canoe capsized when sea water suddenly entered it due to high tide and the bois¬terous nature of the sea.

In the process, some of the fishermen fell into the sea and started swimming for sur¬vival, but one of them, whose name was given only as Philip, 25 years old, could not surface again after diving into the sea.

Fishermen in the community immediately joined in the search for the missing colleague but couldn’t find him ‘till Tuesday around 5pm when the body was washed ashore at the Dixcove beach.

The body, which was said to be in a near state of decomposition, has since been conveyed to the Dixcove Government Hospital for preservation.

The Chief fisherman for Dixcove, Nana Essel, confirmed that the mortal remains of the young fisherman had been found but denied that the body was in a decomposed state.

He indicated that it was only one of the eyes of the deceased that had been plucked out when the body was found.

He pointed out that after discovering the body the fishermen around alerted the police who instructed the fisher folks to send the body to the morgue.

He believed that the deceased was washed ashore as a result of some rituals that were performed after he (Philip) had gone missing.
