Volta Region Among 4 Regions To Benefit From World Bank Loan On Health Delivery

In a strategy to ensure equity, efficiency and quality in health service delivery in Ghana, Dr. Joseph Teye Nuertey, the Volta Regional Health Director has disclosed that the Ministry of Health has secured a World Bank loan to start a pilot in four (4) regions.

According to him, the four regions which are going to benefit from the Health Ministry’s pilot are the Volta, Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.

Speaking to Peacefmonline.com, Dr. Joseph Teye Nuertey asserted that these regions are normally areas where people refuse posting to work, making effective and quality health service delivery a challenge for the country.

“I talked about the issue of people refusing posting to work at rural areas, and the Ministry of Health has taken a loan from the World Bank to address the issue and it is a strategy which is going to apart from addressing the issue of equity, it is going to address the issue of efficiency and quality in health service delivery,” he disclosed.

“That is going to be rolled out in four regions; Volta Region, Northern Region, Upper East Region and Upper West Region. We just came back from a World Bank training to roll out the program and I believe that if that is done, it is going to solve most of the challenges in the health sector. It will take care of the health financing, equity, quality because now, people are going to be paid according to their performance,” he stressed.

He believed that as everybody want to get more bonus for their services, they will give their best; reiterating that “they will have salary and bonus and the salary is going to be done on the spot and so there is going to be autonomy”.

He insisted that after the pilot has been done in the four regions, they are assured, depending on the training they have gone through with the World Bank and have seen, it is going improve the health system in the country.

Dr. Joseph Teye Nuertey indicated that country like Democratic Republic of Congo is also doing the same program in Education but, rather Ghana is starting with the Health sector.

“In fact, in countries where this thing has been done, surprisingly, people go to the rural areas; because, go there, you get more money because there will be rural incentives. People will move to areas, hitherto will not want to go,” he asserted.

He mentioned that, people already have shown interest in working in Volta Region as compared to the past when people will not accept posting to work in the region; attributing the success to the good work of his public relations department in the region.
