Sports Ministry Must Invest Heavily In Good Football Pitches- Robert Coleman

Shortly after the 2014 FIFA World Cup, a government White Paper on the Presidential Commission of Inquiry called for the Ghana Football Association and its president to be investigated by way of forensic audit for alleged financial deals totaling over totaling over $400,000 in matches played by the Black Stars.

If that money had been used prudently by way of preparing good football pitches for talents, the nation could have built two 3000 square metres astro turfs from the money and nurtured young talents to assist the national team in future.

With that aside, government is in pole position to carry out such projects, Mr. Robert Coleman has said.

The CEO of Wembley Sports Complex (WSC) has demonstrated this feat by personally building a multifaceted astro turf facility at Kotobaabi in Accra to serve as training grounds for football teams and community clubs who desire to train at anytime within a day.

His achievement has driven captain for the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan, to contract him in building an astro turf football field valued at $250,000 for the Accra Academy Senior High School.

In an interview with Dan Kweku Yeboah on UTV’s ‘Agrodie’ Sports program last Saturday, Mr. Robert Coleman testified that most of the pitches in Ghana were in poor state and this has largely contributed to the horrific injuries most players have suffered during training or proper matches.

Before building the Wembley Sports complex, Mr. Coleman explains that he had wanted to give footballers the chance to train for as long as they wanted without being forced to abandon training due to darkness.

“When you come to the Wembley Sports Complex, we have floodlights so footballers need not worry about playing when night falls. This same thing happens in developed countries where players are able to train at night when they want to avoid the heat”, he said.

He was confident Ghana would be able to produce uncountable number of football players should the sport ministry invest heavily into building replicas of the WSC in every district.

According to him WSC recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with several municipal assemblies and is preparing to build ten of the complex within Accra.
