Ministry of Health (MoH) has released GHC1.5million to the Mental Health Authority following its GHC4.2 million debt owed its medical and food suppliers.
That indebtedness has caused the Mental Health Hospital to shut down its services to Ghanaians.
Speaking on Joy FM Newsnite last Monday, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ministry, Tony Goodman, explained that the Act was passed to provide funding that will mitigate problems in Ghana’s mental health sector.
He said although the Psychiatric Hospital was currently running on donations, government has come to their rescue and have thus allocated significant funding and expenditure to the mental health care delivery.
He, however, admitted that the problem at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital was due to delays in payment of feeding grants.
Following the passage of the Mental Health Act Law in 2012, it was reported that the Accra Psychiatric Hospital has been battling with financial and logistical challenges.
However, it was believed that when the Act becomes operational, it will streamline state support for the mental health service and put an end to these financial and logistical challenges.
