PPP To File Contempt Suit Against EC Today

The Progressive People’s Party has threatened to sue the Electoral Commission today over contempt charges for accepting its filing fee last week.

The commission declined receipt of the GHS 50000 filing fee from the aspirants which initially formed part of the nomination  process following an injunction placed on the fee.

The court action prevailed because the opposition Progressive People’s Party (PPP) on the eve of nominations went to court to challenge the EC’s filing fee for presidential nominees.

In order not to be liable for contempt, the EC decided not to accept the banker’s draft from all the political parties.

However, in an interesting twist, EC chair, Charlotte Osei surprisingly accepted the fee from the PPP when it decisively attached it to the nomination forms which was presented to the EC Boss Friday.

In what remains an episode of confusion in the legal issues, the PPP has threatened to sue again the EC for contempt of court.

The party’s National Chairman, Nii Allotey Brew -Hammond said the party has initiated a legal motion with its Lawyers to file for contempt against the Election Management Body(EMB).

” …Our relief was to have the EC not accepting any filing fee. And since they have accepted our filing fee, they are in contempt of the injunction. We will leave it to the judges to tell us the offering and accepting at the same time. Even if we trapped them we made the effort to remind the commission that they were not supposed to not accept but they objected.”
