The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has said it is prepared to drop the court application seeking to restrain the Electoral Commission (EC) from proceeding with balloting for positioning of presidential candidates for the December 7 elections.
The PPP on Friday filed an application at the High Court to quash the EC’s decision to disqualify its flagbearer, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, from contesting in the presidential election.
The party, among other things, wants the court to order the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Charlotte Osei, to grant Dr Nduom the opportunity to amend and alter the anomaly for which he was disqualified as well as accept his nomination forms as amended and or altered to enable him to contest the elections.
The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers has however expressed fears that the legal tussle between the PPP and the EC were likely to drag the polls.
But speaking on Citi FM Monday, the Policy Advisor of the PPP, Mr Kofi Asamoah Siaw said the party was aware of the implications that the suit may have on the elections and that it was ready to settle the matter out of court should the EC rescind its decision.
“There’s a possibility that the calendar will be affected. The commission can on its own resolve this matter outside of court by revising their decision and then we can proceed. So the issue has to do with how the EC intends to move forward with this kind of situation,” he said.
“If they want a court process obviously it will cost them some days and some weeks. If they want it outside court, we can sort it out then all of us have our peace,” Mr Asamoah added.
