President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to residents of the Volta Region to disregard assertions by some people that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has abandoned the region.
According to him, the comments were being made by detractors of the NDC government, who are bent on creating disaffection for the government in the Volta Region.
He said, “Sometimes, some people say no work has been done in the Volta Region, and continue to propagate that propaganda. It is not based on facts. I know it is done for political reasons and it is a very wicked lie.”
Opposition parties and a considerable number of people in the region have maintained that the government has deprived the Volta region referred to as the ‘World Bank of the NDC, of the needed development.
Some residents and chiefs have also expressed their displeasure about the lack of development in the region in recent times.
Speaking at Kpando yesterday on the first day of his six-day campaign tour of the region, President Mahama thanked the people for their support over the years and promised that the government would never disappoint them.
“Your constituency has never disappointed the NDC and I must tell you that the NDC will never disappoint you. Recently, our opponents have been going round creating the impression among the people of the Volta Region that NDC has neglected them: that is absolutely false,” he said.
He stressed that “we have invested heavily in the road, water, health and education sectors.”
Water Project
The President also inaugurated a 6,720 cubic meter per day capacity treatment plant at Kpando, which would increase water supply in the municipality and its environs from 130,000 gallons a day to about 1.5 million gallons a day.
The project, which involved the rehabilitation and expansion of a water treatment plant in Kpando Todzi, was funded by the World Bank and the Netherlands Government at the cost of $12.7 million.
The project, which started in February 2011, is expected to serve about 42,000 people by 2025 at Kpando, Sovie, Anfoega, Nkonya, Aveme, Gbefi, Dzigbe and its environs.
Previously, the residents relied on mechanised borehole water system, which supplied 130,000 gallons daily.
Abandoned Projects
Torgbui Akom VIII Fiaga of Gbefi Traditional thanked the president for the execution of the project and rehabilitation of the Kpando-Torkor road.
He expressed disappointment with the delay and abandonment of some other projects.
The construction of a bridge over River Aplado was advertised three years ago, but nothing has been done about it, he added.
The chief urged all residents in the Kpando Municipality to maintain peace in the area.
Volta residents threaten Mahama
Residents of the South-Dayi District, particularly those along the Asikuma-Kpeve-Have stretch of the eastern corridor road, recently threatened to embark on a massive demonstration during the president’s tour of the region.
Other areas
The President, who has also toured Kwamekrom, Dambai, Borae and Krachi Nchumuru, also inaugurated a Community-Day Senior High School (SHS) at Bowiri in Kwamekrom.
