Two men fight over a child

Personnel from the Domestic Violence and Victims' Support Unit (DOVVSU) on Wednesday arrested a 27-year-old machine operator, Kennedy Attateh for allegedly assaulting a 26-year-old driver's mate, Charles Tetteh over the paternity of a four-year-old girl (name withheld). Police Chief Inspector Irene Oppong, Public Relations Officer of DOVVSU told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra that Miss Georgina Awao 23, a stone quarrying operator and mother of the child was impregnated by Tetteh about four years ago but abandoned her and travelled outside Accra. She said later Attateh went into a relationship with Georgina who informed him of the pregnancy without the knowledge of Tetteh. Police Chief Inspector Oppong said when the child was about three years old, Tetteh returned and informed Georgina about his intention to send the child to his mother at Amasaman. She said Georgina agreed to the request and lied to Attateh that her auntie had requested to stay with the child. Police Chief Inspector Oppong said Tetteh usually spent the weekends with her daughter at Aloboshie, near Achimota and it was during a weekend that friends of Attateh saw the girl with Tetteh and informed him. She said angered by the information, Attateh mobilised some friends and assaulted Tetteh who reported the matter to the police and Attateh was arrested. Police Chief Inspector Oppong said the police would handle the assault case and refer the paternity issue to the family tribunal for arbitration. Meanwhile Attateh has been charged with assault and granted bail.
