John Peter Amewu, Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has employed crude tactics to deceive Voltarians to vote for them in the upcoming general elections.
According to him, most of the projects in the region have been abandoned.
Mr Amewu raised concerns about the dualization of the Ho-Sokode main road, which was started in August, 2016 but has not seen any major construction work to date.
Abandoned Sokode Road
The 10.5 kilometres project, which stretches from Sokode Gborgame to the Civic Center in Ho, is estimated at about GHȻ98 million and expected to be completed in 18 months’ time.
But as the elections draw closer, the contractor working on the road seems to be under some pressure from the NDC to expedite work to complete the road to please the people of the region.
DAILY GUIDE has gathered that funds have not been released for the work and the bulldozer, which was hired by the contractor, has broken down for the past two weeks.
Speaking to the media during the inspection of some ongoing projects in the region, which have been captured in the ruling NDC’s Green Book, which touts the achievements of the Mahama administration, Mr. Amewu noted that the NDC can no longer take Voltarians for granted with their deceitful acts.
He said that “we cannot continue to accept this from the NDC and since the President believes in evidence-based issues, it’s appropriate to present the evidence of the NDC’s deceit in the Volta Region.”
Abandoned Eastern Corridor Road
Touching on the Eastern Corridor Road, which is touted as one of the major achievements of the NDC in the region, Mr. Amewu complained bitterly about the poor quality and slow pace of work on the road despite the NDC’s claim that work was progressing speedily.
The Asikuma junction to Peki stretch is already developing potholes only six months after its construction, he added.
Mr. Amewu pointed out that the government must look beyond pleasing Voltarians and rather put the taxpayer’s money to good use.
“This is the legacy President Mahama and the NDC are leaving for the people of the Volta Region. We can’t be witnessing this as Ghanaians. An asphaltic concrete laid within three months had to be cut to this extent to mend the road. It is a complete failure. We’ve been told that work is progressing speedily on the road but there is no single bulldozer, grader or any road construction equipment on the road. It is unfair to use taxpayer’s money this way,” he added.
A drive on the same Asikuma-Peki road shows that work on certain portions of the road, which began during the tenure of former President Atta Mills in 2008, had been abandoned.
Non-Existent Kpando Projects
Another project captured in the green book which drew the attention of the NPP is the Kpando township roads which the MP for the area Dela Sowa keeps touting as his achievement. Another project, which is nowhere to be found in the Kpando Municipality, is the toilet facility for the Kpando Zongo community.
Some residents, who spoke to DAILY GUIDE, expressed shock at the revelation and wondered why the MP would mislead her own people and Ghanaians.
Deceitful Hohoe Projects
According to Mr. Amewu, the contract for work on the assembly hall of the St. Francis College of Education in Hohoe, was awarded in 2006 under former Kufuor administration and almost completed by 2009 when the party left office.
“This project was awarded in 2006 under the NPP government but again under the NDC government, through propaganda and deceit, is claiming that it built this building. What kind of propaganda and lies are we sending across to our young ones who are yet to enter into politics?” he quizzed.
The fact that the NDC government is willing to take credit for what they have not done means they cannot be trusted and I urge Ghanaians to vote them out come December 7 and bring the NPP to power to restore the hope to Ghanaians, he stated.
