Mr Prosper Bani, Interior Minister, on Monday reassured prisoners of government’s commitment to establish special courts closer to prisons to handle remand cases.

      “The President is worried about conditions in prisons and is considering special courts to speed up the hearing process of remand cases,” he stated.

     Mr Bani gave the assurance during a visit to the Ho Central Prisons as part of a day’s working visit to the Volta Region to assess the security situation ahead of the December polls.

      He said the initiative would reduce congestion at the prisons and provide “prisoner comfort”.

     Mr Bani said government was also working towards improving vocational training facilities at the Ho Central Prisons to make the stay of inmates productive.

      The Minister was accompanied by the Acting Director General of Prisons, Mr. Emmanuel Yao Adzator, Inspector General of Police, Mr. John Kudalor, Mr. Francis Komla Ganyaglo, Deputy Volta Regional Minister, and the Chief Director of the Ministry of the Interior, Mrs. Adelaide Anno-Kumi.

     Mr Bani said the Prison Council had set up the ‘Efiase’ project to reach out to the private sector and individuals to support government’s effort at reforming and rehabilitating inmates through financial donations.

     Mr Adzator told the inmates that mechanisms were being put in place to enable them to exercise their franchise.
