Police Service Refute Allegation About Special Voters List

Director-General in charge of Operations of the Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has refuted accusations leveled against his outfit for unlawfully adding names of some newly recruits into the special voting list.

The Police Service has rejected accusations that it is conniving with the Electoral Commission (EC) to unlawfully add the names of some police recruits to the special voters’ list.

Members of the opposition parties especially the New Patriotic Party [NPP] and People's National Convention [PNC] have championed moves against the Electoral Commission [EC] for conniving with the Police Service in legal terms to add-up new names who would vote in the upcoming elections.

In an interview with CITI FM news, he stated “Some were sent to Pwalugu, Winneba , Takoradi and the rest, so all these people are already in the system and are registered voters. So it is not true that we are adding new names and you all know that there is no way somebody can vote if the person is not a registered voter. There is no way weather the person is voting on the dee-day of voting or is voting on the special day, he/she has one opportunity to vote.”

He further continued that he can choose to vote on the special day of voting or 7th December

“On voting day, I can decide to vote on the dee-day or vote during the special day of voting, so it is not all our people who can vote at the same time, some may decide but by virtue of their duties of performing they may not be considered to even vote on the special day and would have to wait to vote on the dee-day. You would see some policemen or soldiers in uniforms also voting on the same day of the elections, so there is nothing like any new name on the list.”

“All the people that we have are all registered and valid voters who have the opportunity to vote only once,” COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno said.

The memo, which was written by the Director General of Police Service, COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu on behalf of the IGP, was in two parts.

The first part instructed all Divisional Commanders, all Regional Commanders, and all Commanders in charge of Police training schools to submit the names of Police officers whose names are not on the special voters’ register.

The second part, directed the aforementioned commanders, especially the commanders of the Police Training Schools, to make sure that all recruits have their names on the special voters’ list.
