U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May has congratulated Nana Akufo Addo on his election as President of the Republic of Ghana.

In a letter addressed to him, the U.K Prime Minister noted that she deeply values the long-standing relationship between Ghana and U.K and believes the period ahead would offer both countries a great opportunity to do more.

Statement below

I wanted to congratulate you on your election as President of the Republic of Ghana. I recognize that it was a hard-fought campaign and that your margin of victory was impressive.

Our two countries share a strong and long-standing relationship, and one which I value deeply. I believe that the period ahead offers us a great opportunity to do more together.

I look forward to continuing our excellent co-operation on defence, drugs, crime and national security, and to working together on challenges such as tackling corruption.

Alongside our ongoing support to Ghana in areas such as governance, poverty reduction, education and health, I hope that we can look to deepen our economic co-operation.

I wish you and the people of Ghana every success. I look forward to meeting you when you make a visit to London.

Yours sincerely
