Stop Pampering Yahya Jammeh . . . - Politicians Warn

Nana Ofori Owusu, a member of the Progressive People's Party, has called on the long-standing ruler of Gambia, President Yahya Jammeh to accept defeat and step down.

Speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Nana Ofori Owusu advised the Gambian leader to cede power and use the proper structures of the country's laws to defend his seat in government.

He wondered why Mr. Jammeh would initially accept defeat but later reject the results in the name of election rigging.

President Yahya Jammeh, 51, has refused to hand over the baton of the country's leadership to the President-elect Adama Barrow.

The President-elect's inauguration is due for Thursday, January 19 while Mr. Jammeh's tenure ends on 18th January.

It's however unclear what will happen on Wednesday when Mr. Jammeh is expected to step down, following Gambia's Supreme Court's inability to hear the petition seeking to annul the country's elections until May.

Nana Ofori Owusu told African leaders not to pamper Mr. Jammeh but rather condemn his decision to hold on to power.

“We shouldn’t pamper him. We must stop the pampering. The man must go. ECOWAS Presidents and leaders must speak against him and tell him that, my friend, go away. We won’t tolerate this.”

Also addressing the issue, a member of the ruling NPP Communication team, John Kumah believes calamity awaits President Yahya Jammeh if he fails to step down by 18th January.

John Kumah was of a strong view that Mr. Jammeh will have no option but to concede defeat, stating emphatically that "if he knows what is right for him, I think he should avoid the calamity hanging on his head.”

He advised Mr. Jammeh to do the honorable thing so as to earn a good reputation for himself.

The Spokesperson of 2016 Presidential candidate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh also admonished President Yahya Jammeh not to be adamant in his decision to hand over power smoothly to the President-elect.

He stated that if President Jammeh concedes defeat, he will go into the history books of Africa as one of the great leaders who allowed for democracy in his country.
