GFD Begins Nationwide Consultations On Amendment Of Disability Law

The Ghana Federation of Disability (GFD) has begun nationwide consultations to collate views on the proposed amendment of the disability law.

The goal is to fine tune the law to make it consistent with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability

The Federation has been working together with Mind Freedom Ghana and Media Caucus on Disability on this.

Mr. Joshua Makubu, acting Advocacy Officer of GFD, said they wanted to deepen the conversation and provide the opportunity for persons with disabilities (PWDs) to make input into the proposed amendment.

Speaking at forum held for its members in Kumasi, he said, the Disability Act 715, needed to be strengthened.
This was important to effectively promote their social inclusion, welfare and development.

He added that the stereotypes and stigmatization could not be allowed to continue.

Contributors to discussions at the forum called for the creation of a special desk by the government to take care of the needs the PWDs.

Again, they asked for tax exemption for businesses that hired more than five persons with disability.
