PHOTOS: Veep, Catherine Afeku Visit Families Of Kintampo Waterfalls Victims

The vice president, Mahamadu Bawumia has visited Sunday's accident scene at Kintampo as well as the affected families.

Pledging government's support for the families, Dr. Bawumia described the death toll as a "major loss".

What was meant to be a period of excitement at the Kintampo Waterfalls turned gory on Sunday after some revelers from the Wenchi Methodist Senior High School in the Brong Ahafo Region were crushed to death after a huge tree tumbled into the water from the mountain.

The students who were returning from an excursion from the Northern Region to Wenchi diverted to the Waterfalls at Kintampo to have fun in the company of some of their teachers.

Two out of 11 persons who were trapped and injured at the waterfalls have been referred to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman and the Sunyani Regional Hospital for intensive care.

Sources from the Kintampo Municipal Hospital indicate the injured persons on admission are 13 whilst the 19 who have been confirmed dead are at the hospital's morgue waiting for their families to come for their mortal remains.

The vice president was accompanied by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Catherine Afeku and Kwaku Asoma Cheremeh, the region's minister.

The families they visited were at Kyeremankoma, Gruma line and the magazine areas in the Kintampo Municipality.

Speaking to the media, Madam Afeku said her ministry will liaise with Weather forecasters in the region to be updating tourist sites to prevent any future occurrence.

"The tourist site will not be closed down as a result of the tragedy. We're here to support and encourage the families that are bereaved", Madam Afeku revealed.

She said a safety audit will be established across all tourist sites in the country to protect lives.
