A 27-year-old electrician and a 23-year-old mason have been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each by a Koforidua Circuit Court for robbing a taxi driver at Kassadjan, a suburb of Koforidua.
Samuel Danquah the electrician and David Afarimbas the mason pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit crime to wit robbery and robbery, but were slapped with the sentence, which was to run concurrently.
Prosecuting, Chief State Attorney, Emily Addo-Okyireh told the court presided by Madam Mercy Adei Kotei that the complainant was Samuel Agutey Justice, a 42- year-old teacher and part-time driver, is a resident of Betom, a suburb of Koforidua.
He said that the accused reside at Abrewa Nkwanta and Asokore Pipeline respectively, both suburbs of Koforidua.
The court heard that on October 14, last year, at about 12:30 am, the complainant was engaged by Danquah and Afarimbas, who boarded his taxi cab from Dad’s Bar at Kenkey Factory Area to Abrewa Nkwanta, all suburbs of Koforidua.
Addo-Okyireh said on reaching a section of the Kassadjan road near the Koforidua cemetery, Danquah told the complainant to stop by a nearby bush so that he could ease himself.
Being suspicious, the complainant rather stopped at a place where he could run for his life in case of any attack.
Addo-Okyireh said, the complainant kept his ignition on and waited for Danquah to get out of the car, but Danquah rather dipped his hand into his pocket and pulled out a knife.
The court heard that the suspects asked the complainant to surrender his Sony mobile phone valued at Gh¢400 and Gh¢60.
Addo-Okyireh said Agutey Justice handed over his mobile phone and money to the accused and they asked him to flee from the scene.
The prosecution said the police arrested Danquah near the Koforidua Cemetery.
The court heard that when Danquah was sent to the Koforidua Central Police Station for questioning, he met the complainant at the same police station lodging complain.
The court heard that the complainant identified Danquah as one of the accused, who robbed him of his valuables.
The prosecution said Danquah admitted the offence and led the police to arrest the second accused, Afarimbas, and they led police to the crime scene and a search on them revealed the stolen items.
