Mills: Government Will Not Interfere With Sports

President John Evans Atta Mills has assured Ghanaians that an Atta Mills government will not interfere with sports administration in this country, once the rules of transparency and accountability are observed. He gave this assurance yesterday when he presented a package worth US$750,000 to the players and technical team of Ghanas under-20 national team, the Black Satellites, for winning the World Cup, at the Castle. Analysts believe this assurance will nip in the bud, attempts by certain persons in the Mills administration trying to cause disaffection in certain sports circles, especially within football administration. The round of applause which greeted this assurance was an indicator of the underlying tensions which were building up. The package included 30 brand new Toyota Corolla vehicles for each player and member of the technical team. Members of the Satellites management team were rewarded with US$5,000 each. In addition, each of the players were given a GH10,000 insurance bond, which would be worth about GH179,000 in 2024 (15 years hence).
