The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has called on owners of structures on government lands to immediately remove them to prevent them from being demolished.
It mentioned some of the lands being encroached on as the East Legon Green Belt, the land along the Odaw River, Korle Lagoon, Old Fadama, Mensah Guinea, the Railway Station (Kwame Nkrumah Circle) VIP Terminal, the stretch from Avenor to Sikkens Bridge, Agbogbloshie, Glefe and Chemunaa.
A statement signed by Numo Blafo, the Head of Public Affairs, AMA, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said last year the AMA demolished unauthorised structures in those areas to allow for the free-flow of water to avert disaster but the people were rebuilding.
It cautioned hawkers to desist from plying their trade on and under footbridges for the free flow of traffic.
The statement said hawking on the road was against AMA Street Hawking Bye-Laws 2011 and the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2008 (Act 761) Section 29(2).
It called on vehicle owners to remove their abandoned cars on pavements and road shoulders and desist from turning the pavements into mechanical shops and garages.
The AMA warned that if the owners failed to heed to the call the vehicles would be towed and offenders surcharged.
