A leader of the Delta Force group of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) which stormed the offices of the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator in Kumasi, smashed windows and doors and threw him out of his office has been arrested.

Kwame Bamba who is 37years and a mechanic was arrested by the police on Saturday and has been detained to assist with investigations whilst there is an ongoing search for his accomplices.

During the attack on Friday a member of the Delta Force sustained a deep cut and bled profusely but was hurriedly carried away by other members of the group to an unknown location.

In a statement issued in Kumasi on Saturday, Assistant Public Relations Officer for the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Godwin Ahianyo explained, the suspect was in police custody assisting with investigations and urged the others to report to the police "in their own interest."

He said the police will not allow or countenance any lawlessness that would mar the peace and serenity in the region.

The group claimed that Mr George Adjei, the newly appointed Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator for the region, was an outsider who was unknown to them and had neither been in the trenches nor suffered with them when the NPP was campaigning to win 2016 general election.

The Regional Security Coordinator’s office is in the same building with that of the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), which is about three blocks away from the building housing the regional minister’s office.

The group members petitioned the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Simon Osei-Mensah, about three weeks ago, expressing their displeasure with the appointment of Mr Adjei.

According to the members of the group, they are not interested in the position of the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator but insist that the person must come from the Ashanti Region.

Delta Force

A spokesperson for the group, Mr Emmanuel Fosu, said the members of the Delta Force had presented two petitions to the Ashanti Regional Minister, after the appointment of Mr Adjei was announced, but all their pleas had fallen on deaf ears.

He explained that they had sacrificed their lives and everything, with some of them sustaining injuries and arrest prior to the December 7, 2016 polls.

Mr Fosu said members of the group did not understand why the appointing authority would bring in an unfamiliar security coordinator who would not appreciate their contributions and concerns.
