Ghana Shippers And Maritime Awards Held

The first ever awards for the Shipping Industry took place over the weekend at the Labadi Beach Hotel.

Organised by Ninetyeightz Events, the Company behind the Ghana Aviation Awards, the first ever Ghana Shippers Awards recognised key players and organisation in the Shipping Industry in a well attended event.

Delivering the welcoming address, CEO of Ninetyeightz Events, Bergis Kojo Frimpong indicated that Ghana’s discovery of oil in commercial quantities cannot be written in the history books without an honourable mention of the Marine and Shipping Industry players.

He indicated that the awards will be an annual event to recognize individuals and organisations which serve Ghana through the Shipping Industry.

The shipping industry generates Ghana’s highest revenue with a contribution of over 80% of Government’s total revenue generated in 2016.

Present at the event was Madam Beatrice Vormawaa, Ghana’s first Lady Ship Captain who called on women to take keen interest in working as seafarers to boost the representation of females in the industry.

She revealed that working as seafarer has given her and her colleagues a broader view of life and instilled a sense of discipline in her.

According to her, "even though going to sea is tough, anyone who goes into it comes out seasoned, independent, ambitious and intelligent.”

She called on young ladies to take up the challenge of becoming seafarer.

Consolidated Shipping, McDan Shipping, Westblue shipping, Red Sea Services and Maersk Line were the won numerous awards on the day of the event.
